CAT NO: DIDACTICNPS0041

Spectrometer For Studying Nuclear Physics and Automation System For Studying Nuclear Physics Description and Tender Specification:

Spectrometer For Studying Nuclear Physics and Automation System For Studying Nuclear Physics.

This system has been designed for the study of nuclear physics and it enables to carry out a lot of important experiments of nuclear physics such as Compton scattering, production of couples, absorption of gamma rays, activity of radioactive sources, X rays, measuring ambient radioactivity, cosmic rays, etc…
This type of system is usually equipped with holdable radioactive sources ; however, an automation system designed to isolate radioactive sources and to prevent users from any contact with these sources, has been added so that students can work with the maximum safety level.
Then the device enables to carry out a remote control of the instrument.

SPECTROMETER FOR STUDYING NUCLEAR PHYSICS
This spectrometer consists of a central unit of 33 x 22.,9 x 6.,3 cm, of a cable for connecting this unit with a PC, and of a software.
The central unit is provided with a shielded metallic casing containing the following components:
A regulated power supply unit being able to output a potential difference ranging from 0 V to 2500 V with a maximum current of 1 mA.
Output voltage can be varied by steps of 5 V
A preamplifier-amplifier chain being able to supply a total gain ranging from 2x to 1000x
Upper-level and lower-level discriminators
An analog-to-digital converter, with clock signal of 80 MHz, with 2048 channels (it is also available with 1024, 512 and 256 channels)
A buffer store for data
A USB interface for the connection with a PC
The software installed and running in the PC with which the spectrometer is connected also enables to control all the features of this spectrometer and to display and analyze the results of measurements.
It also includes a library of standard spectra of isotopes to allow an easy identification of the isotopes available in the samples under examination.

The main operational modes of the system are:
MCA for the analysis of pulse width
MCS for temporal analyses
MSB for the use with Mossbauer systems

AUTOMATION SYSTEM FOR STUDYING NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Automation system has been designed and produced with industrial components and technologies and it is an exhaustive support for in-depth studies on experimentation
of phenomena of nuclear physics.
The automation of the process that enables its remote control is managed by a PLC coupled to a supervision SCADA software.
Nuclear spectrometer will examine the samples recording the results of measurements on graphic pages of a specifi c software.

Description of analysis process
The four samples having to be analyzed are placed on a revolving table inside a shielded store provided with sliding door.
As process starts, a manipulator arm provided with suction cup rotates towards the revolving table and picks up the sample having to be analyzed.
Then the arm rotates until it arrives over the cell prearranged for the analysis where it lays the sample ; then the arm goes away. The nuclear spectrometer starts the analysis.
Six different filters can be interposed between spectrometer and sample, or the sample can be approached to the instrument to reduce the time of analysis.
At the end of the measurement, the arm will bring the sample back to its starting position.
The whole system is enclosed in a transparent case of polycarbonate that ensures protection, besides enabling to display all the components of the system.
Description of Web control
Island has been designed for its installation
inside a laboratory. The PLC of the equipment can be connected
with an Ethernet network available in the school.
This enables to control process automation from any PC connected with the network via Web Browser (e.g. : Explorer or Firefox).

TRAINING PROGRAM
System mod. can be used with remote control as explained above.
It allows to carry out several tests such as:
Compton scattering
Production of couples
Absorption of gamma rays
Activity of radioactive sources
X rays
Measuring ambient radioactivity
Cosmic rays
Dimensions: 1000x1000x560 mm
